Pet relocation from the Philippines to Philippines

Bringing a dog or cat into the Philippines: the SPS clearance, the microchip, the vaccinations and deworming records your pet needs, and the release formalities at the port.

The short answer

Bringing a dog or cat into the Philippines needs an SPS Clearance — the import permit — approved by the Bureau of Animal Industry before the pet boards a flight, a microchip, up-to-date anti-rabies vaccination and the species core vaccines — FCRVP for cats, DHLPPI for dogs — with antiparasitic treatment recorded, and the clearance applied for once the rabies vaccination is at least 14 days old

Requirements for Philippines

The steps below are the ones that decide your departure date. Everything else follows from them.

SPS Clearance

The import permit from the Bureau of Animal Industry. It is applied for online and has to be approved before your pet's flight — not something to arrange on arrival.

Microchip

Your pet has to be microchipped, and the chip number should match the paperwork.

Vaccinations

Anti-rabies and the species core vaccine — FCRVP for cats, DHLPPI for dogs — have to be up to date, with the dates recorded.

Deworming records

Deworming treatment recorded by the attending veterinarian in the origin country.

How the work is sequenced

Step by step

  1. 1

    Microchip, vaccinations and parasite treatment

The microchip is fitted, the rabies vaccination and the species core vaccine — FCRVP for cats, DHLPPI for dogs — are given, and the parasite treatment is recorded. The waiting periods then run: the clearance cannot be applied for until they are complete, and the rabies vaccination has to be at least 14 days old at that point.

  2. 2

    Apply for the SPS Clearance

We file the import permit with the Bureau of Animal Industry once the vaccination and parasite-treatment waiting periods are complete. Approval usually takes 3 to 5 working days when there are no issues, so the flight is dated at least a week after the clearance is expected, and nothing else can be booked until it is issued.

  3. 3

    Health certificate and origin paperwork

The exporting country's veterinary authority issues the health certificate and endorses the origin documents. We date it 10 days before the flight — an estimate based on country standards rather than a fixed rule — and it moves when the exporting country's policy sets a different window.

  4. 4

    Flight and arrival inspection

The pet flies accompanied, in cabin, as checked baggage or as manifested cargo. A BAI Veterinary Quarantine Officer inspects it at the airport against the printed clearance and the original health certificate.

  5. 5

Release, duties and 30-day home quarantine

The pet is released and stays at the address declared on the clearance for 30 days before moving anywhere else. An import broker for the duties, fees and taxes applies only when the pet flies on its own — when the owner travels with it, there is nothing to broker.

Philippines questions we get asked

If your question is not here, message us — the answer depends on your pet, not on a template.

Is there a quarantine period for my pet on entry to the Philippines?

The Bureau of Animal Industry releases a pet whose documents are complete once the quarantine officer has inspected it at the port. Our advice, and our practice, is to keep your pet at the address declared on the SPS Clearance for the first 30 days before moving it anywhere else.

What happens if my pet arrives in the Philippines without an import permit?

An approved SPS Clearance is required before your pet enters the Philippines. Without it the Bureau of Animal Industry can refuse entry, and the pet can be confiscated and destroyed, returned to origin, or sent to a third country at your expense.

How much does it cost to import a pet?

The cost varies with how many pets are arriving, their breed and age, the airline, the broker in the origin country and the crate size. A one-time personal SPS Clearance can cover up to three animals in one shipment, and repeat travel with the same microchipped pets is allowed.
